Priority Region: Transboundary Watersheds

Staff contacts:

The Transboundary Watersheds Priority Region encompasses the northwestern B.C. watersheds that empty into the coastal temperate rainforests of Southeast Alaska. Included in this region are the Taku, Whiting, Stikine, Iskut, and Unuk rivers.

The region supports major wildlife populations including moose, grizzly and black bears, rare migratory birds, caribou, and mountain goats. There are large wild runs of all five species of Pacific salmon which in turn support communities and wildlife in both Southeast Alaska and British Columbia.

This is sublime and grand country; the drainages combine to incorporate over 32 million contiguous acres of diverse landscapes, stark topography, and limitless beauty.

The Taku River Tlingit (TRT) call the Taku watershed home, though they live in Atlin just over the height of land to the north. The TRT number 372, less than 100 of whom live in Atlin.

The Tahltan First Nation claim 22 million acres to the south of the TRT, encompassing the other major transboundary rivers. The Tahltan number 5,000. Some 1,000 of their people inhabit communities within the traditional territory.

Wilburforce concentrates its grants on efforts to ensure the long term ecological integrity of the Taku watershed.

We are supporting the following organizations for work in this area. When you click on an organization name you will see a list of all grants made to that organization, which may include projects funded in other program areas.

(Organizations receiving science-related grants are not included in this list. Please see our Conservation Science section for those grants.)
